Biography
Born in Kirkee, India, Birkwood's father was Herbert Mills Birkwood, Governor of Bombay. He had fought at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. He was Commander-in-Chief in India from 1925. He later attempted to become Governor-General of Australia. He retired in 1930 and died on 17 May 1951.
