Biography
William Malcolm Hailey was the first Governor of the Punjab. He was born on 15 February 1872 and was educated at Oxford. He left his post in the Punjab to become Governor of the United Provinces and held this position until 1934, although he was twice absent whilst others acted on his behalf. In 1912 Delhi was drawn under the administration of a Chief Commissioner, as the capital of British India moved there, and Hailey was named the first Chief Commissioner. In later life, he joined the Privy Council. He died in 1969 aged 97.
