Biography
A British politician, Thomas Townshend held several important Cabinet posts in the second half of the 18th century; between 1782-1784, he served as Leader of the House of Commons, Home Secretary, Colonial Secretary, Leader of the House of Lords and the first President of the Board of Control over the East India Company. Raised to the peerage as Baron Sydney, he assumed the role of President of the Committee on Trade and Foreign Plantations. The cities of Sydney in Nova Scotia, Canada, and Sydney in New South Wales, Australia were named in his honour in 1785 and 1788 respectively.
