Biography
Richard Southwell Bourke was born in Dublin. He was a member of the Conservative Party, and had previously travelled to Russia. He initiated a census of India during his term as viceroy. In 1872 Bourke was visiting the penal colony of Port Blair when he was assassinated by a prisoner.
