Biography
Known as Earl Temple when he was younger, he attended Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. Before becoming Governor of Madras Temple had been a soldier, and the Secretary of State for the Colonies. His time in Madras was mostly spent attempting to relieve the sufferers of the Great Famine of 1876–78. He also faced the Rampa Rebellion of 1879. He left in 1880.
