Biography
St John was born on 21 March 1837 on the Isle of Wight and studied at Addiscombe Military Seminary He joined the Bengal Army in 1856, serving in the United Provinces, and then in Abyssinia during the war there. St John served as the de-facto first Chief Commissioner of Baluchistan from 1877 to 1887. The Second Anglo-Afghan War happened during this time. He was acting resident of Hyderabad and then concurrently Chief Commissioner of Coorg and Resident of Mysore. After some time in Coorg, St John was recalled to Northern India where had previously worked. He became Chief Commissioner for Baluchistan, holding that position for ten years until he died at Quetta.
