Biography
Krushna Chandra Gajapati was born on 26 April 1892, the son of a Maharaja. He was educated at Newington College in Madras. He had been a promoter of Oriya identity throughout his life and had first proposed an Odisha state in 1930. Upon the formation of Orissa as a province, Gajapati was asked to become the first Chief Minister. He occupied this post from April to July. Gajapati returned as Chief Minister during World War Two. Members of the Indian National Congress Party had previously resigned in protest at the conflict. He died on 25 May 1974 and was given an Odisha State funeral.
