Biography
After Denison's two months as Acting Viceroy, the post passed to Lawrence. He was originally from Yorkshire but grew up in Derry, part of what was the province of Ulster. After the Anglo-Sikh Wars the Punjab was annexed. It became a Lieutenant Governorship and John Lair Mair was the first to occupy this position. He held it throughout the Indian Rebellion. Denison returned to Britain in 1859. He was the intended successor to the Earl of Elgin.
