Biography
Pigot was born on 4 March 1719. He entered the service of the East India Company in 1736, at the age of 17. He defended Madras during its siege from 1758 to 1759, and occupied Pondichéry on behalf of the company. He resigned his office in November 1763 and returned to Britain, being made a baronet in 1764. In 1766 Pigot was made a Baron of Ireland and served as an MP for Bridgnorth before returning to India in 1775. He was at odds with his council in Madras and was eventually arrested there. He died in confinement on 11 May 1777.
