Biography
Harris followed in the footsteps of his Grandfather, 1st Baron Harris, who had served as Governor of Madras and Commander-in-chief of the Madras Army, and his father, 2nd Baron Harris. Both had fought at Seringapatam. George Francis Harris remained as Governor of Madras throughout the Indian Rebellion. The Madras Army helped fight against Indian rebels. During this time the University of Madras, Madras Zoo and first Madras passenger railway was established.
