Biography
Wood was born on 16 April 1881 in Devon. He held various major offices including Ambassador to the United States, and Secretary of State for War. As viceroy he oversaw the Simon Commission, and faced Gandhi's Civil Disobedience Movement. He signed the Delhi Pact which ended unrest in the short term. However it soon re-emerged and Gandhi was re-arrested. The Lord Irwin died on 23 December 1959.
