Biography
Canning was the last Company Governor-General, and the first Royal Governor-General, also known as the Viceroy, of India. He was born on 14 December 1812. Having previously been Postmaster General and sat in Parliament, he took over as Governor-General after Lord Dalhousie. It was during this time that the Indian Rebellion broke out. In 1862 he became ill, and returned to England. He died that year on the 17th of June.
