Archibald Percival Wavell, 1st Earl Wavell

Wavell was born on 5 May 1883 and was a veteran of World War One. He had also seen active service in World War Two. This was his first term as Commander-in-Chief in India. He was previously Commander-in-Chief in the Middle-East, but swapped roles with Claude Auchinleck. It was at this time that the Japanese invaded Burma. Later in 1942 Wavell returned as Commander-in-Chief, with Alan Hartley as his deputy.

Wavell's military experience led him to the appointment of Viceroy during World War Two. In this position he ordered the army to provide relief during the Bengal Famine of 1943. He was Viceroy during Gandhi's Quit India campaign and the threat of Subhas Chandra Bose. He was replaced in 1947 by Lord Mountbatten. Wavell died on 24 May 1950.
